Meet Our Team

I’ve been an educator for over 30 years, and teaching has truly been my life’s work. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with middle school and high school students, as well as in special education—each experience shaping me into the educator I am today.

I began my journey at Washtenaw Community College, earning my associate’s degree in general studies, and then continued on to Eastern Michigan University where I earned both my bachelor’s degree in English language literature and social science and my master’s degree in special education. Seven years ago, I also completed my administrative certification, expanding my ability to support students and staff in new ways.

This is my 12th year in online education, and I’ve been with HVAM since the very beginning. It has been incredibly rewarding to help build a school from the ground up and to watch our students learn, grow, and succeed. Being part of their journey is what continues to inspire me every day.

Rachel Clore is the 6-12 grade Assistant Principal at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Rachel Clore has been in education for 11 years and joined HVAM in 2022. Before Rachel joined HVAM, she served as a middle school math teacher at a brick and mortar school in Indiana for 6 years. Rachel has a Master’s in Instructional Leadership and a Bachelor’s in Secondary Math Education. Rachel believes that students learn best when their teachers are fully supported and equipped to be the best educators they can be. Rachel is passionate about bridging gaps in student learning and building student confidence in their ability to achieve. Rachel currently lives in the Greater Lansing Area. In her spare time she enjoys cooking/baking and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Mayer is a master educator currently serving as the Freshman Academy Coordinator at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for 10 years. Jocelyn joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2022. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Jocelyn worked as a secondary educator in Metro Detroit specializing in supporting English Language Learners and building STEAM/arts education programming in underserved communities.

Mrs. Mayer holds a masters degree in education from the University of Michigan. She also holds a bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary humanities from Michigan State University. She is certified to teach Fine Arts, Social Studies, and English Language Arts. Mrs.Mayer believes that if you can read, you can do anything! Her passions lie in helping humans build confidence and self awareness to unlock their potential.

Jocelyn currently lives in Royal Oak, MI. Outside of school, you’ll find her supporting the arts, learning about history, or spending quality time with family and friends.
Fun Fact: She loves to travel! Some of her favorite experiences have been swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, kissing the Blarney Stone for luck in Ireland, and exploring the ruins of Pompeii.

My journey as the Highpoint elementary principal for kindergarten, first and second grade has been long and wonderful. I was an elementary classroom teacher overseas for ten years before moving to Florida. After working as an elementary administrator in Florida, I moved back to Michigan where I grew up.

While living and working in Michigan, I saw more and more students not being successful in their neighborhood schools. Every student and family had their own personal reason that made attending their local school a challenge. I joined Highpoint Virtual Academy five years ago to help provide a high-quality education option for families other than their local school. Every day I work to provide the best possible education experience for every child and family.

Amanda is our 3-5th grade assistant principal at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for over ten years. She joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2022. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, she worked as a Middle School English teacher in Madison Heights, MI for 5 years. Amanda holds a Bachelor’s & Master’s degree in education from Michigan State University. She believes that all students are capable, and building confidence is crucial.

Amanda is passionate about helping students feel their best, believe in themselves, and know the importance of being kind. Outside of teaching, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family, including her two young daughters. She also loves reading, cooking, and enjoying Michigan summers outdoors.

Mrs. Little is the Middle School Principal at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for over 20 years. Mrs. Little joined Stride in 2014 and Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2020. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, she taught a variety of elementary grades and middle school math in person and online.

She has earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Michigan State University, teaching endorsement from Oakland University, and master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University. Mrs. Little believes that every student can be successful when they are in a supportive learning environment. Her passions include honors/advanced coursework, social-emotional learning, and academic writing, especially in the math classroom.

Mrs. Little currently lives near Flint, Michigan. Outside of teaching, she enjoys watching her daughter play travel volleyball and fostering puppies through a local rescue center.

Beth Sahhar is excited to join Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan as the Special Programs Manager. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of roles including teacher, special education leader, and Assistant Principal. Her experience has centered around supporting students with diverse learning needs, building strong educational systems, collaborating with families and staff, and helping schools create inclusive environments where all students can thrive.

Beth earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Hisotry from LIU Post. She also holds a Master’s degree in Special Education and a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership and Administration from Johns Hopkins University.

This school year marks Beth’s first experience working in an online learning environment, and she is excited to support students and staff through this innovative platform. She strongly believes that all students, regardless of their ability, can succeed when provided with the right support, encouragement, and opportunities. Special education has always been where her heart is, and she is passionate about advocating for students and helping families and educators work together to ensure student success.

Outside of education, Beth enjoys spending time with her sons, traveling, and taking advantage of all that sunny Florida has to offer.

Margaret brings more than 20 years of experience in education. She holds a B.A. in Education from Ferris State University and an M.A. in School Counseling from Grand Valley State University. Margaret joined HVAM in 2021 as a high school counselor and was promoted to K–12 Counselor Coordinator in 2024. She also holds certifications in school administration, social studies, and career and technical education.

Committed to service, Margaret regularly donates her time and expertise to support others. She resides in Belding, MI, and enjoys spending time with family and friends and traveling to sunny, palm-lined destinations.

Laura Wiechertjes (pronounced “weaker – chess” – but students call her Mrs. W.) is the High School Principal at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for 20 years and joined Highpoint in 2020. Before joining HVAM Laura taught Middle School and High School science in Arizona and Michigan.

Laura attended the University of Arizona and holds degrees in Physiology and Secondary Education. She strongly believes in servant leadership and her primary goal in education is to joyfully encourage, serve and help others grow.

Laura and her family live in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. Laura spends most of her free time supporting her 2 boys in robotics. She loves reading, coffee, theater performances and all things Harry Potter, Marvel and Dr. Who. Laura’s happy places are the beach, the country and very tall and fast roller coasters.

With 20 years of dedicated service at Stride, Julia has built a career rooted in student growth and community connection. She taught grades K–8 with Arizona Virtual Academy, then 4th grade math with the K12 National Math Lab, before opening Highpoint in 2016. At Highpoint, she simultaneously juggled the roles of advisor, truancy, McKinney-Vento, and community engagement. Today, she oversees all student support services, including advisors, truancy, and community resources and engagement, ensuring students and families receive comprehensive, compassionate support.

In her spare time, Julia enjoys crafting, sewing, and gardening, but her real passion is the health of her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, staying current on research and preparing homemade meals tailored to the breed’s specific needs.

Erin Cornwell is a 4th Grade Reading Interventionist at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan who is certified in SOR (Science of Reading). This is Erin’s 8th year in education, her 4th at Highpoint Virtual Academy. Erin is currently a grad student at MSU where she is furthering her studies in literacy practice and assessment.

Jamie Sandoval is a 4th grade math intervention teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Sandoval has been in education for 11 years. Mrs. Sandoval joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2025. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Mrs. Sandoval was a teacher in a variety of states. She taught many grades throughout K-6. Mrs. Sandoval has a Masters of Education in Elementary Education from DePaul University. Mrs. Sandoval believes that all students can learn and making mistakes are key in being successful. She is passionate about teaching math becuase of all the ways that you can figure out an answer and problem solving is one of the most important skills someone can learn. Mrs. Sandoval lives in southwest Michigan with her family. When she’s not teaching she likes to play at the beach with her kids, go on hikes and listen to music. An interesting fact about Mrs. Sandoval is that she lived in Hawaii for 3 years.

Kelly Ampola is a 4th grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Ampola has been in education for 15 years.Mrs. Ampola joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in Aygyst 2020. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Mrs. Ampola worked as a 1st and 4th grade teacher at a private school in Utica, Michigan. Heather Bauer is our MTSS coordinator at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Heather has been in education for 36 years. She joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2020 . Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Heather worked as classroom teacher, Reading Interventionist, Reading Specialist, Assistant Principal and Principal all at the elementary level.

Mrs. Bauer holds a Bacholar of Arts from Hillsdale College, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Education Specialist Degree in School Administration both from Oakland University. Heather believes that education is for all, and students can all achieve! She is passionate about making education fun and meaningful for ALL students. Heather’s goal is to help students, and their families grow to their fullist potential – in a true collaborative team effort.

Heather currently lives in Novi, Michigan. Outside of teaching, she enjoys traveling, playing cards, bing watching Netflix and reading.

Mr. Bell has been a teacher for 26 years! He currently teaches 4th grade, but has taught 5th grade, 2nd grade, and Kindergarten. Nobody likes a stuffy classroom, least of all Mr. Bell. He likes to strech out and do activities that help students engage with their subject materials. Mr. Bell believes that if y ou show up to class and participate, you are more than half way to learning the subject matter.

Emily Bimer is a 3rd Grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Emily joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2024.

Emily holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University. She also holds an Associate’s degree in Music from Oakland Community College.
Mrs. Bimer believes in a student-centered approach where every learner feels seen, valued, and welcomed in the classroom. Building meaningful connections with students and making learning fun is at the heart of her teaching.

Outside of teaching, Mrs. Bimer enjoys traveling, baking, playing video and board games, doing crafts, and spending time with her family and her 2 cats, Eevee and Gizmo.

Fun Fact: Mrs. Bimer has attended Comic Cons all over the country, and she makes costumes to dress up as her favorite characters.

Ms. Hannah loves teaching 2nd grade here at Highpoint! She just joined last year and enjoys getting to know the students and engaging with them every day! Her favorite part of online teaching is being able to get to know the families more including the learning coaches and interacting with them every chance possible. Whether chatting it up about their successes, answering questions, helping them out, or just chatting about their day she enjoys getting to know students families because they are what make this all possible! She is currently working on her Masters Degree for Elementary Matematics Education and you will never guess what her favorite subject is. Although she is a new teacher she brings many years of being a substitute teacher, parapro, and school volunteer with her. When she is not busy having fun with her teaching she enjoys playing music on her guitar and ukulele, playing with her kids, going on adventures, and trying new things!

Janis Bork is a 5th Grade teachere at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Janis joined Highpoint in 2020. Janis has been in education for 27 years, where she has worked in middle school, 4th grade and as an Instructional Technology Coach. She graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor’s and attended Lawrence Tech University to work on her Master’s in Education.

Teri Bowen is a 4th Grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Bowen joined Highpoint in 2025. Mrs. Bowen has taught 4th & 5th grade for many years, and specializes in math. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and then earned an Elementary Teaching Certificate from Modonna University. Mrs. Bowen’s passions outside of work are reading, needlepoint, golfing, and her family! She also has a Cavachon dog named Scout who takes her on many walks every day! Alex Counselman is a 1st Grade teachere at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Alex joined Highpoint in 2020. Alex has been in education for 12 years, where he has worked as a behavior interventionist, and a substitute teacher. He graduated from Phoneix University with a Bachelor’s degree. Mr. Counselman enjoys reading, video games, and watching movies. He is an avid thrifter and likes going to flea markets and garage sales in his free time. Natalie Curley is a fifth grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Natalie joined Highpoint in 2021. Natalie has been in education for 5 years and worked all 5 years for Highpoint. She graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on English-Teaching. Lisa Curtis is a first-grade teacher at Highpoiint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She came to Highpoint in November of 2020. Lisa has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary education with a minor in English and an Early Childhood (ZA) endorsement. Lisa also has a Master’s degree in Educational Technology. She got both of her degrees at Western Michigan University. Lisa is married and has two children.

Her son Chris goes to Michigan State University and is a Powerlifter and her daughter Sam who is going to be a senior in high school next year and also loves to go to the gym. Lisa has a cat named Ellie too. Lisa feels that every child deserves to be recognized and nobody should ever feel less than important. Her favorite saying is, “Never judge anyone because you never know what they are going through.” Lisa loves to read, watch shows with her daughter, and go to the gym to work out on the weight machines whenever she can. Something unique about Lisa is that she can talk like Stitch from the movie Lilo and Stitch. She does other voices too and has a lot of fun teaching her students!

Emily Downey is a 5th Grade Math Interventionist at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for almost 10 years. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2021, Mrs. Downey worked as a classroom teacher for 5 years. Mrs. Downey holds a Bachelor in Elementary K-5 and Emotional Impairment K-12 from Northern Michigan University. She believes that all students learn in a different way, and it is important to find that way to help them succeed to their fullest potential. Mrs. Downey is passionate about helping students build strong foundational math skills, grow in confidence, and reach their full potential. Mrs. Downey currently lives in St. Ignace, Michigan. Outside of teaching, Emily enjoys spending time with her three children and 3 dogs.  She loves to go on walks and anything that involves water. Christopher Dunning is a third grade reading intervention teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Dunning has been in education for 7 years. Mr. Dunning joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2025. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Mr. Dunning worked as a kindergarten teacher for 5 years and a second grade teacher.

Mr. Dunning holds a Master of Arts degree in Reading from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Dunning also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the University of Michigan. Mr. Dunning has certifications in elementary education, early childhood education, and reading specialist. Mr. Dunning believes that each student should be held to high expectations to achieve goals in their learning. It is also important to foster positive relationships to give students the supports they need. Mr. Dunning is passionate about helping students build confidence in their reading abilities.

Christopher currently lives in Flint, MI. Outside of teaching he enjoys spending time with family, camping, and cooking/baking.

Amanda Eggert is a Kindergarten Reading Interventionist and has been with HVAM since 2022. She loves to instill a lifelong love of reading with her students through engaging and fun lessons. She enjoys inspiring young readers by introducing them to fun characters. Mrs. Eggert has been teaching for 12 years and has experience in kindergarten, first, third, fourth and fifth grades. She has taught in Michigan and Colorado! She received her elementary education degree from Michigan State University in 2013. Mrs. Eggert lives in Grand Rapids. Outside of teaching, she enjoys the outdoors and everything the different seasons have to offer. She also loves spending time with her family and traveling. Kary Engelmann is a Transitional Kindergarten teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan and has been with HVAM since 2019. Ms. Engelmann has been in education professionally for 8 years focusing her time and skills on working with students in elementary school on Reading development. Her degree, in Elementary Education along with an Early Childhood endorsement, was earned from Cornerstone University in 2003. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Ms.Engelmann had previously homeschooled her own children for four years. She enjoys spending time with her three children, gardening and training and showing their quarter horses during the summer. Amanda Fields is a third-grade homeroom teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, where she is proudly serving in her fifth year. She is currently in her ninth year as a professional educator, bringing dedication, experience, and a strong commitment to student success to her classroom.
Ms. Fields earned a double major in Education and Integrated Science from Grand Valley State University, along with a Master’s degree in Educational Technology and Instructional Design from Western Governors University.
She is passionate about fostering a supportive, interactive online classroom environment where all students feel empowered to succeed. Amanda lives near Alpena, where she enjoys taking advantage of Northern Michigan’s natural beauty. Outside of teaching, her hobbies include skiing, hiking, and traveling.

Mariah Foster is a fifth grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Foster joined Highpoint in 2022. Mrs. Foster has been in education for 11 years. She graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Outside of teaching she enjoys reading, going on walks, and playing board games with friends and family. Mrs. Foster has been married for 10 years and has 2 daughters, Parker and Indie.

Mrs. Gaylord is a Fourth Grade teacher at HVAM. Shas been teaching for over 25 years! She has taught many grade levels and ages, from Pre-school through 12th Grade! She has taught all subjects, including English Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), Math, Science, and Social Studies. She has even taught German, Physical Education, Computers, Art, Yearbook, Newspaper, Creative Writing, and STEM/STEAM classes.

She has taught exclusively in Michigan with both Michigan and Common Core standards in Farmington Hills, Dearborn, Canton, Flint, Burton, and Grand Blanc. She has also been a substitute teacher in Dearborn, Flint, Burton, and Davison.

She is from the Thumb Area of Michigan (Sanilac County), which is by Lake Huron, but had lived in Isabella County while attending Central Michigan University, as well as in Oakland County, Wayne County, and Genesee County while teaching. Her husband works in IT and they have three amazing children: a boy in 9th Grade, another boy in 8th Grade and a girl in 7th Grade! They also have three kitties and eleven fish. She loves spending time with friends and family, singing at church (and the National Anthem at events), reading, and traveling.

Mrs. Genova has been teaching for close to 20 years with Kindergarten being her primary focus. Mrs. Genova holds a bachelor’s degree in education with a concentration in language arts from Oakland University. Last year, Mrs. Genova was asked to start the first early childhood, 4 year old preschool program at HVAM which has grown into a fantastic program. Mrs. Genova believes in respecting all students and allowing them to feel safe and confident in all situations which will foster their success. Mrs. Genova loves being with her family,having big family parties, cooking, working out, traveling and most importantly, her first cup of coffee in the morning!

Stephanie Hardesty is a 1st grade homeroom teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for 25 years. She joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2021. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Stephanie worked as a teacher of general education classrooms, mainly preschool ages. She holds a Bachelor or Arts in English Language Arts with a minor in Elementary Education from Grand Valley State University and is currently working on obtaining her ESL certification. Stephanie believes that every child is unique, deserving of a safe environment that nurtures their social, emotional, and academic growth while tailoring instruction to individual needs, learning styles, and developmental stages. She is passionate about helping students find a love for learning and nurturing a growth mindset. Stephanie currently lives in South Lyon. Outside of teaching, she enjoys spending time with family, watching her kids mature, being outdoors, and sharing God’s love with others. Fun Fact: Stephanie has 14 chickens. Chenise Harris is a third through fifth grade Health and Physical Education teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Harris has been in education for nine years and joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2022. Before Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, she worked as an elementary and middle school physical education teacher in both public and charter schools.
Mrs. Harris holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University. However, after finding joy in substitute teaching, she quickly pivoted and became certified to teach Physical Education and Health through the Michigan Teachers of Tomorrow program. Mrs. Harris believes that real relationships are the bridges for learning. She is passionate about helping students be physically active, make healthy choices, and know they are cared for. Melissa Johnson is a Second Grade Reading Support Skills teacher and has been with HVAM since 2021. Mrs. Johnson has been working in education for 18 years, teaching 2nd grade all the way up to college-level classes. She has earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and multiple certifications in education and literacy. When she’s not teaching, Mrs. Johnson enjoys getting outside with her family and their dog, as well as reading, crafting, and cheering her kids on at their sporting events.

Amy Johnson is a Kindergarten Reading Specialist at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Amy has been teaching 19 years and this is her fourth year at Highpoint. Amy has taught Head Start/GSRP, second grade, fourth grade, and kindergarten. Amy holds a Bachelor or Arts Degree from Spring Arbor University in Language Arts and a Master of Arts Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Amy also holds an Early Childhoood Endoresment in Early Childhood Education and is in the process of becoming LETRS certified. Mrs. Kennedy has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an Endorsement in Early Childhood from Eastern Michigan University along with training in Science of Reading. She has been teaching for over 20 years ranging from Preschool to 8th grade. She joined the HVAM family 2017, the 2nd year HVAM started and was the only Kindergarten teacher at that time. She went on to be a Kindergarten Intervention teacher and just transitioned to be the TK-2nd grade Flex Teacher this year. Anne believes that each child has a unique method of learning. A teacher’s job is to discover how each child learns and provide a safe and engaging environment to encourage self-confidence, self-initiative and life-long learning. Anne’s husband and my 3 children presently live in Canton, Mi, but had the opportunity to live in Germany for 1 ½ years and traveled to 14 different countries in Europe while they were there. Besides going on adventures with her husband and children, Anne loves singing, painting, crafting and jewelry making. She wrote a children’s book about my family and her dog. They currently have 2 Morkies, Anne and her Morkie Jasper became certified to be a therapy dog team.

Mrs. Kerr brings over 10 years of educational expertise to her role as reading interventionist at HVAM, where she has been teaching since 2023. She is passionate about fostering strong classroom communities and aligning her teaching to the latest and greatest Science of Reading research.

Mrs. Kerr holds a Master of Arts in Learning, Design, and Technology, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, both from Central Michigan University.

Mrs. Kivari has been in education since 2015 and has worked in a variety of roles, ranging from general education classrooms to specialized small groups. She has also served in roles such as an MTSS committee member, department head, and class advisor. Kelly Macaulay joined High Point in 2023 and is currently in her third year teaching fifth grade. Prior to High Point, she taught in international schools in Hungary, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Bethany Maloy is a 5th grade homeroom teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for 25 years. She joined Highpoint Virtual Academy in February 2025. Before joining Highpoint, Bethany worked as a 2nd grade teacher in a general education classroom. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English and an Early Childhood (ZA) endorsement from The University of Michigan in Flint. She also has her Master’s degree in Education from Marygrove College. Bethany believes education should inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every student. Lisa Miller is a K–2 Assistant Principal at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. With over 20 years of experience in education, she joined HVAM in 2020. Lisa holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University, along with an Educational Leadership Certification from the State of Michigan.

Lisa serves as a K–2 Assistant Principal with a strong commitment to early literacy, the Science of Reading, and personalized learning experiences that help every child succeed. With a passion for supporting young learners, Lisa works collaboratively with teachers, students, and families to create a positive and engaging school community where all students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Julie Rodgers is a 5th Grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She began teaching at HVAM in 2023. Cara Rudzinski has a decade of dedicated service in the field of education. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Oakland University and went on to complete her Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning from Capella University. Victoria (Vickie) Russell is a K-5 Math Instructional Coach at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been in education for 16 years. Mrs. Russell joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2020. Meg Weiler is a general education kindergarten teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has been working in education for 12 years and joined Highpoint in 2024. Adam Cogswell earned his Associate’s Degree from Kellogg Community College and plans to return to school next year to pursue his teaching degree. Since 2021, he has served as an Academic Advisor with Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, supporting students and families across multiple grade levels. Amber Dingman is the Lead TK–12 Advisor at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan (HVAM). Since joining HVAM in fall 2021, she has supported students and families across grade levels while helping guide academic progress and engagement in the virtual learning environment.

With more than 30 years of experience in education, Amber has served in a variety of roles dedicated to helping students thrive in their learning environment. Her educational journey includes serving as a K12 Online School Learning Coach for six students and homeschooling her own children from preschool through grade 12. These experiences have given her a deeper understanding of both virtual and home-based education.

Brittany is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (Lower and Upper Elementary) through Concordia University Ann Arbor as part of the Grow Your Own grant program. She believes that every child can succeed when given the right support, encouragement, and strong partnerships between school and home. Shelby Klein is the onboarding coordinator at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan where she collaborates with staff members to welcome new students & helps them acclimate to virtual learning. Before joining HVAM, she worked in victim advocacy, substance abuse services, and with the unhoused population for 20 years. Kimberly holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Western Michigan University. Kimberly is a parent to an adult son and twin middle schoolers. Hello! I am Christina Ledesma. I am an 8th grade Academic Advisor at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. I have been in education in multiple facets over the last 26 years. I began my career in Early Childhood Education with the Head Start program. Of the many roles I have served in, I can’t choose a favorite. I enjoy being able to help wherever I am needed. I have been married for 24 years, and my three children are the lights of my life. You will often find me researching some new topic, creating something fun with my hands or singing a song at the top of my lungs. Trish Masnovi is one of our Community Engagement Specialists. She has been in education for over 20 years. She began as a substitute teacher and reading aid. Next, she enjoyed piloting the Hybrid learning sites with K12 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She joined the HVAM staff in 2018., as a high school advisor. Before moving into education, she worked several Ad Agencies, and an ABC television affiliate. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Communication from Suffolk University. Trish also believes that every student is capable of success. Trish is extremely passionate about helping connect both students and Learning Coaches to create community. Alyssa Mogielski is one of our Elementary Student Support Advisors at Highpoint, where she primarily works with our 5th grade students. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Baker College in 2021 and has been working in educational settings since 2018.
Before joining Highpoint, Alyssa gained experience in a variety of roles including classroom teaching, paraprofessional support, and one-on-one student support for learners with diverse needs. She is passionate about working within the education system to help students and families feel supported, empowered, and successful in reaching their goals.

Adam Moore is a high school truancy officer for grades 10th-12th. He has been working in education for 13 years and in his 8th year at HVAM. He has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Northwood University in 2008. He has 3 daughters who are all active that play basketball and other sports. Brian Petty is the 11th grade academic advisor here at HVAM. He has a background in leadership, student development and engagement, and is passionate about walking alongside students during some of their most important high school years. Before joining HVAM, Brian worked in higher education and spent some time in both the nonprofit and corporate world. Ben Slocum is the 8th grade Truancy Prevention Partner, starting with Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in August of 2025. He attended several colleges over his career, graduating from Bethel College of Mishawaka, IN in May 2009 with a BA in Liberal Arts, in May of 2011 with a Masters of Ministry degree, and from Liberty University Lynchburg, VA, with a Graduate Certificate of Pastoral Counselling in July of 2013. Ben has performed career guidance for adults at Michigan Works and youth career/behavioral guidance with high school students in Northern IN at Jobs for Americas Graduates (JAG) for a total of 12 years before coming to HVAM. Ben lives in Niles, MI with his bride of 46 years Donna. They have 3 daughters (2 married), 2 granddaughters and a grandson. Ben also has a berry farm, chickens and raises honeybees.

Carrie Spoor is a 9th grade Student Support Advisor at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Carrie has been in eduacation for 6 years. Carrie joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in October of 2024. Kyla Uekert is the Elementary MKV Liaison at HVAM. She joined HVAM in 2020, starting out as a 5th grade advisor where she built strong connections with students and families. Two years ago, she transitioned into the Elementary MKV Liaison position and continues to support and advocate for students in meaningful ways. Kyla will be graduating soon from Western Michigan University with her degree in elementary education. Education is a big part of her life, as her husband is also a teacher. She is a proud mom of three kids and loves spending time with her family. In her free time, Kyla enjoys spending time with her family, soccer, and reading.

Imani Walker is a Student Support Advisor at HVAM who is passionate about creating student-centered experiences rooted in an understanding of how people think, feel, and learn. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising Management with a minor in Business from Michigan State University and is currently working toward a master’s degree in User Experience (UX) Design, also at Michigan State University (GO GREEN GO WHITE!). Imani applies UX principles to better understand the human brain, emotional responses, and decision-making, with a strong focus on mental health and well-being. She believes students are individuals, not numbers, and prioritizes empathy, clarity, and human-centered support to create experiences that feel accessible, empowering, and supportive for students and families.

Jessica Anderson is a warm-hearted, upbeat, and dedicated second-grade teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan with eight years of experience in education—and a lifelong love of working with kids. She has been teaching (and learning right alongside her students!) ever since she can remember. Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, Mrs. Anderson taught first, second, third, and fifth grades (in Georgia) before moving to Michigan, where she added fourth grade to her experience. She is now thrilled to be back in her happy place—second grade, where curiosity, creativity, and confidence shine bright. Mrs. Anderson holds a Master’s degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Gifted Education From Augusta Univeristy and earned a professional score on the edTPA, making her eligible for national certification.

She believes the key to student success starts with confidence and helping children truly believe in themselves. (Her favorite vocabulary word to teach is YET because there is power in this word!) After retiring from R-P, she has taught and worked in virtual schools as an Instructional Coach for the past 5 years. Kim Carey is a high school studio art teacher specializing in photography at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Ms. Carey has over twenty years teaching experience, joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2025 where she is thrilled to blend her love of teaching, art, and photography. Ms. Carey believes the study of arts improves students’ critical thinking skills, increases resiliency, supports all other areas of education including academics and real-world interests, and she believes that art is for everyone. Ms. Carey holds two degrees from Eastern Michigan University, a Fine Arts degree majoring in Studio Art with a concentration in photography and minor in speech communication and theater arts and a Bachelors of Science degree with a major in English language, literature and writing plus minor in Art Education.

She is a professionally licensed educator rated highly effective in both the States of Michigan and Florida. Ms. Carey’s own artwork including photography, printmaking, mixed-media, and watercolor has been exhibited in Michigan, North Carolina, and Florida. In addition to classroom teaching, Ms. Carey has served in education as a curriculum developer writing lesson plans and grade level assessments for school districts. In her classroom, Ms. Carey enjoys implementing lessons and activities that empower students to use their creative capacities and critical thinking skills in a way that promotes meaningful learning. Mrs. Carrillo is one of the Spanish Culture teachers at HVAM. She joined the HVAM family four years ago but has been in education for over a decade. She lives in southwest Michigan on a hobby farm with her 3 daughters, husband, miniature goats, chickens, ducks, and barn cats. One of Mrs. Carrillo’s favorite things to do is travel. If she is not home, you can likely find her on a plane heading to her next adventure.

Mrs. Carrillo even had the opportunity to spend a few years teaching English in Latin America and lived abroad in Guatemala during her college years. She is Mexican – American and bilingual and loves to share her language and culture with students. Outside of teaching and travel, Mrs. Carrillo loves to spend time outdoors, reading a good mystery novel, watching true crime documentaries, engaging in Pilates exercise, and, of course playing with her girls. Jane Corso teaches biology as part of the 9th grade academy. Jane has been teaching science for 18 years and this is her 5th year at Highpoint Virtual Academy. Jane is from the Philadelphia area and graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelors in Secondary Education Biology. Previously, Jane taught in St. Augustine and Tampa, Florida at the High School and Middle School levels. She is very passionate about science and ejoys sharing her passion with her students. I’ve been teaching for five years and have been part of the K12 community for the past three. This is my first year at HVAM. I teach World History to 9th and 10th graders, and in the past I’ve also taught U.S. History and Government. I also hold a Master’s degree in American History and Government, which continues to fuel my passion for understanding our nation’s foundations and civic life. I currently live in Mason, Michigan, and moved to Michigan in 2019. I became a teacher because I truly believe in the power of education to change lives.

A high school diploma opens doors, and education is something no one can ever take away from you. I love helping students see that history isn’t just about the past — it helps us understand the world we live in and the choices we make for the future. My favorite part of teaching is helping students make those connections and realize they are capable of more than they think. Salvatore Cusmano is a 9th Grade World History teacher here at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Cusmano has been a teacher for 5 years and has been with HVAM since 2023. Autumn Droste is a High School Math teacher at HVAM. Ms. Droste got started in Education by working in Special Education in Traverse City, Michigan. She completed her student teaching at a local career technical school. She is passionate about the learning that happens in non-traditional settings and in fact, recieved her teaching degree through a non-traditional path herself.

She is excited to continute this path and complete her first year in a virtual setting. She believes that Math is foundational to teaching students how to learn and loves being given the opportunity to help her students succeed in it. Ashley Duby is a high school Fine Art teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has worked in education for 8 years and has worked alongside students from Pre-K through high school. Mrs. Durrant is the high school Music teacher and Electives Lead teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She is a highly qualified educator in the state of Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Wayne State University and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. I have over 30 years of experience working with Special Need Students. I have been a Special Education Department Chair for more than15 years in a brick and motor setting. My teaching journey has taken me from a small school district of only 6 high schools to one with over 20 high schools. Mrs. Joey Franco: With 16 years in education , including the last two at HVAM, I am blessed to serve students while living in Florida and working for Michigan schools. Throughout my career, I have taught every grade level from Kindergarten through Seniors and have also served as an Academic Math Coach and an administrator. These diverse roles have given me a well-rounded perspective on education and strengthened my commitment to supporting both students and teachers.

Math is truly my passion. I love helping students build confidence, discover their potential, and learn to genuinely enjoy mathematics. There is nothing more rewarding than watching students grow, especially when they begin to believe in themselves and realize they can be successful in math. I firmly believe that everyone should learn something new every day, no matter their age. Growth does not stop in adulthood; in fact, it should accelerate.

I am a proud wife of almost 20 years to my childhood friend and mother of two daughters, ages 33 and 12, and I treasure time spent with my family and friends. I especially love cheering on my youngest daughter at her sporting events. In my personal time, I also enjoy playing poker. As a lifelong learner, I have earned seven college degrees ranging from Cosmetology to Mathematics to Educational Leadership , a reflection of my belief that curiosity, growth, and passion for learning should continue throughout a lifetime.

Dr. Harrison is a high school English Language Arts teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Dr. H has been in education for over 27 years. Joel Hill is a High School English teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Hill has been in education for eight years. He joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2022. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Mr. Hill worked with AmeriCorps and Teach for America to teach literacy and ELA to preschool and middle school students in Muskegon and Detroit. He loves finding creative ways to engage students in literature. Mr. Hill holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies from Grand Valley State University in which his areas of study were literature and gender studies. Mr. Hill believes that a rich, challenging, and equitable education is the true key to a successful and fulfilling life.

Chelsee Hodges is a special education case manager at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Chelsee has been in education since 2016, starting as a science teacher, then an English teacher, and then as a special education case manager. She has taught elementary self-contained, middle school, and high school special education students. Having a daughter with special education needs, Chelsee knows the importance of advocacy for the child with exceptional needs and circumstances. She has taught in Mississippi, Alabama, and Michigan. Chelsee holds a Master’s degree in Emotional and Behavioral Disorders from William Carey University. She also holds a Science Education degree from the University of Southern MIssissippi and has several endorsements in the state of Michigan. Mr. Jamison is a 9th Grade English Teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Jamison (also goes by Mr. J.) has been in education for over 15 years. He joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2023. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, he worked as Middle School ELA teacher in South East Michigan, and a Special Needs Paraprofessional in various grade levels and districts for a number of years. He was active in the Anti-Bully campaign called “Challenge Day” and 829 Michigan that taught writing to underprivileged youth.

Mr. Jamison holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Literature, Language and Writing for Teaching with a Minor in Communication and Theater Arts. He was active in Toastmasters International which is a community organization fostering public speaking skills and helped lead a youth group at the local YMCA in the Detroit area to foster communication and leadership skills. He has been an avid writer since he was 10 years old setting out to write his first full length novel and has been self publishing since the mid-2000’s. I practice bringing relevancy to my teaching so students can engage with the material, using humor, and creating a safe environment where every student no matter their level can thrive.

Terri Jordan is a Physical Science teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Jordan has been in education for 26 years and joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2025. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, she worked as a middle school science teacher at a brick and mortar school and high school and middle school science teacher for an online company.

Mrs. Jordan has a bachelors degree majoring in biomedical sciences with a minor in chemistry and a masters degree in science education. Both were obtained at Western Michigan University. Hello! I’m a math paraprofessional here at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, and I absolutely love what I do. I’ve spent over a year working with students across elementary and middle school as a substitute teacher, and now I get to focus on helping high school students succeed in multiple ways! Whether I’m working one-on-one with students, assisting teachers in virtual classrooms, or any other tasks that I’m needed for, my goal is always the same: to help students feel supported and confident.

I’m currently completing my bachelor’s degree (I have my Associate’s already), with concentrations in English, holistic health, and child development—all areas that deeply inform my approach to education and student wellness. Mrs. Lyon joined High Point in Fall 2022 and quickly felt right at home. She believes Health and Physical Education are so much more than just a grade — they’re about creating lifelong healthy habits. With a focus on functional health, she encourages students to move with purpose and train in ways that support everyday life, helping them feel strong, capable, and prepared for whatever comes next. Originally from upstate New York, she discovered early that she loved being active and encouraging others to grow. She played collegiate lacrosse, earning a National Championship at the junior college level before continuing at the Division II level in South Carolina. While attending graduate school in Pennsylvania obtaining her Masters in Exercise Science, she coached lacrosse, met her husband, and together they rescued their first dog, Rory — the beginning of their life together and a passion for rescue.

Now settled in Michigan, their home is full of life and love with dogs Rory and Moses, their sassy cat Roxanne, and the many dogs and cats they foster. In October 2025, they welcomed their daughter, Vera —a bright-eyed, strong-willed little firecracker with Oscar-worthy expressions, championship-level snuggles, and a personality big enough to keep the whole household on its toes. Mrs. Menz is a high school English teacher at Highpoint. She graduated with a BA in English and Spanish language and literature from the University of Michigan in 2004, and completed her MEd at Grand Valley State University in 2012. She joined the Highpoint team in 2022 and has over twenty years experience in education. She is passionate about literature, writing, and figuring out what it means to be human. She and her husband are raising three children and a coop full of chickens in rural Bay County. She loves Michigan’s lakes, trees, and ski hills, as well as her local library.

Ms. Tawana Mercer is the Developmental Algebra teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Eastern Michigan University, a Master of Teaching Mathematics from University of Detroit Mercy, and a Master of Public Administration from University of Michigan–Dearborn. With more than 35 years of experience in education, Ms. Mercer is a dedicated advocate for helping students develop strong mathematical comprehension through real-world applications and technology-infused learning experiences. She is committed to creating engaging opportunities that deepen students’ understanding and confidence in mathematics. Mrs. Mochty is the English Foundations and Grammar & Composition teacher at Highpoint. She has been teaching at Highpoint since 2025. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education from Saginaw Valley State University. She is originally from Tawas, Michigan, but moved to Columbus, Mississippi last year due to her husband being in the Air Force. Mrs. Mochty enjoys reading, writing poetry, going on bike rides, camping, fishing, skiing, and really all things outdoors.

Ms. Reece is a Technology teacher with 20 plus years of experience. Born in Toledo, Ohio she graduated from The University of Toledo. She began teaching in Florida focusing on Business Applications, Media, and Web Design. Later, Ms. Reece moved to South Carolina to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Coastal Carolina University. She taught Computer Science courses and was the advisor of the Technology Student Association at her school until 2024. Kai has been an English Parapro at HVAM since 2023 working alongside Mr. Hill in 9th grade English Foundations. Kai’s job is to be extra support for the students and the person to go to if help is needed on homework, understanding class, material, organizing missing assignments, and more! Ms. Train is the HVAM ELA teacher assigned to our Credit Recovery department. Ms. Train has been with HVAM for 5 years, previously teaching 9th grade English and serving as HVAM’s Instructional Coach. Mr. Turner is a Geometry teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Lisa Van Plew is a high school Studio Art Teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She has worked in education in a variety of capacities both publicly and independently for over 30 years. Ms. Van Plew joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2023, and has worked with ages 5-adult in a variety of learning environments; including public schools, homeschool programs, camps, and her independent art studio, Starlight Art Studio. She has spent portions of her teaching career in Spain, California, Illinois, and Michigan. Ms. Van Plew received a B.S in Elementary Education/Art Minor in 1991 and an M.A. in Art Education in 2018. She also serves as a regional leader for Teaching for Artistic Behavior, Inc., coordinating an annual summer art educator retreat. Ms. Van Plew is committed to helping others connect to their innate creativity and expression as a pathway to personal creative wellness. Ms. VP enjoys spending time with her two teenage children and chihuahuas, particularly traveling and camping with them in her vintage trailers to National Parks throughout the U.S. They also enjoy spending time in Southwest Michigan at the lake. Andrew Blumenthal is a 7th Grade Social Studies teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Blumenthal has been in education for ten years, working with college-age students before joining HVAM. Mr. Blumenthal joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2025. Mr. Blumenthal holds a Masters of Arts in Education and Bachelor’s of Science in Secondary Education from Northern Michigan University.

Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, he worked as a Resident Director at Northern Michigan University and a Hall Director and Assistant Director of Housing at the University of Michigan. Mr. Blumenthal is passionate about helping students learn about themselves, grow confidence, build critical thinking skills, and be curious about the world by exploring history. Mr. Blumenthal enjoys soccer, running, cycling, and being in nature. He lives in the Port Huron area.

Robin Bock is a 6th Grade Skills Recovery Math teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Bock has been teaching for 5 years, previously working in-person with 6th and 7th grade math students. Mrs. Bock joined HVAM in 2025. She attended Adrian College and earned her degree in mathematics with an education minor. Mrs. Bock believes that no one is a natural ‘math person’ and that every student is capable of reaching their full potential in math with the right opportunities and support. Andrea Bugg is the 6-12 Literacy Coach at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mrs. Bugg has been in education for 14 years and has taught a variety of subjects including history, economics, social media & technology, and reading. Mrs. Bugg’s passion is in reading and literacy instruction. She strives to make sure all students and teachers have what they need to be successful readers and reading educators in the 21st century. Hi, I’m Mrs. Burns and I am excited to be in my 10th year teaching Physical Education and Health. I earned my degree in Kinesiology, with a minor in Health, from Aquinas College, where I also had the opportunity to play four years of collegiate basketball. I am passionate about helping students build lifelong healthy habits and confidence through movement and wellness education. In addition to teaching, I enjoy staying active and have coached both volleyball and basketball at the high school level. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Ms. Corey worked as a Great Start Specialist, MSU Extension Educator (for nutrition, finance and 4-H), and has 20 years of business management experience.

Ms. Cynthia Corey holds a master’s degree in curriculum & education from Michigan State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in education (minors in earth science and business administration). Ms. Corey believes that classroom community/culture is very integral to student success, creating a safe space for teaching and learning, building curiosity and keeping topics current, informative and engaging. Ms. Corey is passionate about helping unique learners find their inner scientist and enjoy the relevancy of earth science that exists all around us. She also is passionate about character education such as Strengthening Families, Conscious Discipline, Character Counts, Personality profiles, and the 7 Habits. She shares these passions in her classroom and homeroom when time allows.

Ms. Corey currently lives in northwestern Michigan not too far from the HVAM office. Outside of teaching, she enjoys walking her dogs, playing guitar & singing, kayaking, quality time with her three adult children and young nephew, you can also find her hiking one of the many trails around northern Michigan. Fun Fact: Ms. Corey grew up on a small farm near the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and as an adult worked on a farm with more than 100 animals while recovering from cancer (Survivor 10+ years).

Ms. Frankovich is the sixth grade writing skills instructor at Highpoint. She has been working as an educator for over two decades. Ms. Frankovich has had the privilege of teaching literature, writing courses, and history in both middle and high schools. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in English, and she earned a Master of Arts in Education from The University of Michigan. Highpoint has been a highlight in Ms. Frankovich’s career. The facutly, staff, students, and learning coaches make Highpoint a strong community to work and learn in. Wanda Griffin is a 7th Grade Math teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy. She received her Teacher Certification from The University of Michigan Flint and has been teaching Math for twenty plus years. She has taught Middle School and High School Math for her whole teaching Career. She also taught Middle School Math in Nashville Tenesee. Mrs. Griffin holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Education and a Master’s Degree in Middle School Math. She enjoys teaching and doing Math. She has a tutoring business where she turors Algebra and Geometry.

Michelle Grimm has dedicated more than three decades to inspiring students and helping them build confidence in math. For 30 of those years, she taught in a traditional classroom setting, specializing in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, guiding countless students through the challenges and rewards of higher-level mathematics.
For the past two years, Michelle has continued her commitment to student success as an 8th grade math teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy. In this role, she has embraced innovative approaches to virtual learning while maintaining the same high standards, personal connection, and dedication that have defined her career.

Throughout her career, Michelle has remained committed to making math meaningful, accessible, and engaging for every learner. Diane Hatt started at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in 2023 as a Math Interventionist. Before joining Highpoint, Ms. Hatt taught MS Math and K12 Music. She graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in 2005 and taught middle school English in Las Vegas before moving back to Michigan to be closer to family. Nichole has been teaching at HVAM for the past 4 years and loves the flexibility that the virtual environment has to offer both students and staff. Outside of teaching, Nichole has three teenage daughters who keep life eventful and she enjoys many outdoor activities that our seasons in Michigan support.

Peter Jurasek is a 7th grade Physical Science teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. He studied Biomolecular Science and Secondary Education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has been teaching since 2018 and taught in Australia, Sweden, and England before moving back to Detroit to teach at Highpoint. Outside of Science, he loves music, art, hiking, and supporting Detroit sports teams.

Laney teaches 6th and 8th grade Art History at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. She holds degrees from Oakland University and Saginaw Valley State University, including K–12 art certification. Before joining HVAM, she spent 25 years teaching in a brick‑and‑mortar school. She loves family, art, teaching, and helping students discover their own creativity. Laney lives in Shelby Township, enjoys all kinds of studio art, and is married with two boys.

Stef Lorincz is an 8th garde science teacher who loves helping students ask big questions about Earth and its systems. Stef has been in education since 2012, working with elementary, middle, and high school students in science, math, coding, and robotics. Jennifer McCleary is a 7th Grade Physical Science Teacher. He has been teaching for 16 years. She has taught both elementary and middle school. She earned her degrees at Madonna Universuty is Education, Science, and Spanish. She has volunteer in local robotics teams and has a passion for crafting and traveling. She relocated with her family to Mexico for 3 years and spend some time teaching there as well. She loves going on adventures with her family. She has a 7th grade daughter and son in kindergarten. Mr. Adam McCormick is an 8th grade Social Studies teacher with his co-teacher/dachshund-extraordinaire, Charlie, at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. He has been working in education since 2007, serving both middle and high school students throughout his career.

Mr. McCormick joined Highpoint Virtual Academy in 2020 and has taught both 8th grade Math and Social Studies during his time with the school. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Michigan University and his Master of Arts in History from University at Buffalo. He also holds an Alternative Education Certification from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an Athletic Coaching Endorsement from Michigan State University. Robert Pintar has taught 8th grade English at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan since 2020. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and teaching certification from Michigan State University. His teaching philosophy is centered around writing as a practiced skill, language being an art made out of choices, and providing opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery as communicators. His course provides students ample opportunities to experience a wide variety of text types across history and genres. Writing is the centerpiece of his classroom; writing assignments are an avenue for demonstrating understanding of class material and developing communication skills. Mrs. Polcyn has been teaching 6th grade social studies at HVAM for the last 2 years, but started at HVAM as an advisor in 2022. Previously she obtained her BA in Sociology and Criminal Justice and worked in foster care. Once she realized her passion for children, she started working as an educator as an English as a Second Language Facilitator, where she worked for 4 years, prior to starting at Highpoint. She enjoys getting students engaged in learning and developing relationships with students and families. Joe Puplis teaches 8th grade American History. Over the last 15 years, he feels fortunate to have served students at the elementary level (as a para-pro), middle school, and high school levels (as a classoom teacher). He graduated with a teaching degree from Kuyper College and is certified to teach Secondary Education Social Studies. One of his joys of teaching here at Highpoint is exploring the complexity of our history with a diverse group of students, representing many different areas of our state.

Jeffrey Rahl is a middle school PE/Health teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan. Mr. Rahl has been in education for 26 years. Mr. Rahl joined Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan this year. Before joining Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, Mr. Rahl worked as PE/Health and History teacher in the Bay City Public Schools in grades K-12 and in the Essexville Schools working to implement a Behavior and Discipline program to help students find more success in the classroom and reduce repetative discipline issues. Mr. Rahl has a degree in education from SVSU and masters work in education from Marygrove College.

Mr. Rahl is passionate about creating opportunites for students to learn about healthy fitness and nutrition habits that they can use for their entire lifetime. He strives to motivate though movement, encouragement, and challenging his students to improve 1% every day. When away from the class, Mr. Rahl likes to spend time with his family, working out and traveling and playing in ball tournements throughout the United States.

Matthew Rutledge is an 8th Grade Science teacher at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan with four years of experience in education and is in his first year with Highpoint. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Central Michigan University and completed graduate-level studies in substance abuse counseling at Western Michigan University.

Matthew believes that science is how we understand the world both inside and outside of our personal experience, and he enjoys bringing real-world examples into the classroom to spark curiosity and deepen student engagement.
