Student Spotlight: Laila’s Journey at HVAM

Stories & Spotlights

Hello, I am Laila. My experience at Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan (HVAM) has been quite an adventure. I have been attending HVAM since 2nd grade. Time has flown by! I am now a freshman in high school. This journey has been nothing short of amazing. I have been very active socially and academically. I started competing in the spelling bee in 3rd grade and have placed highly each time. I even won last year! I have been a part of the Announcement Team, which I thoroughly enjoy. Not only do I enjoy seeking information, but I also enjoy sharing correct information. I have also been a part of the Young Authors Club, the Service-Learning club, and the Student Council to name a few.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a virtual school. However, my expectations have definitely been exceeded! I have been given the opportunity to feel connected with my classmates as well as my teachers. HVAM gives me a sense of safety. With all that goes on in regard to tragedies at schools, some even locally, I don’t have to worry about whether or not I’ll make it home from school each day. I have more autonomy to my day even with a full day of classes and clubs. I am what you would call a trailblazer for my siblings. I’m the oldest and because of my amazing experience at HVAM, my siblings have attended HVAM since they started school. They look to me for support not only at home, but in school as well.

Most recently, I have been presented with some amazing opportunities through HVAM. I recently traveled to Stride K12 Headquarters in Reston, Virginia to be on an episode of Kids Teach, a video show and podcast with the CEO where students lead the conversation about important topics that affect us. I’ve never been to Virginia, and I’m so honored to represent HVAM in this capacity as well as meet other students from all over the country. I recently was invited to apply for the National Honor Society and am awaiting my acceptance letter. I also recently received an acceptance letter to the HVAM Early Middle College Program. All of this has happened in the matter of a few weeks – it’s been mind-blowing to say the very least!

I am thankful for every opportunity that God has and will allow me. I’m thankful for my teachers and all the staff for their investment in my present and my future. My one piece of advice to other virtual students, if you ever need help, it’s okay to ask. The only answers you don’t get are the ones you don’t seek.
