Student Spotlight: Aydan is Finding His Voice and His Future

Student Spotlight: AYdan

For Aydan, a student at Highpoint Virtual Academy (HVAM), the path to learning has been full of unexpected triumphs. From birth, he has lived with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and sensory processing challenges, and receives nutrition through a gastrostomy tube. He was given a 50/50 chance of walking, talking and communicating. Aydan’s progress has been nothing short of remarkable, thanks in large part to the tailored support and technology provided by the virtual school.

When Aydan started with HVAM, his parents weren’t sure what to expect. “When he was born, we were told he might never talk or participate without an iPad or communication device,” his mother shared. “At first, he just started with the alphabet. Then he matched the entire alphabet perfectly. That’s when the communication device came into play, and we realized he knew so much more than anyone thought. He just couldn’t show it before.”

The technology provided by HVAM has been a game-changer. His mother explained, “Without the iPad and the communication tools from the school, he wouldn’t be where he is today. He’s had the iPad for almost two years, and just recently, he really took off with it, wanting to take it everywhere and use it to talk to everyone.”

Physically, Aydan’s progress has amazed his family and medical team. When he began therapy, he wasn’t walking at all. Now, he confidently moves around the house and even explores rooms on his own. “We had to put up a baby gate because he’s so active,” his mother said. “His neurologist and physical therapist are astonished by his progress.”

One memorable moment came when his nurse practitioner stopped by just to check on Aydan, saying, “Kids with his challenges usually don’t walk by age five. He’s defying those odds.”

Aydan’s parents credit HVAM’s online program with helping their son thrive academically and socially. “He’s done so much better in online schooling than he ever did in public school,” his father said. “Public schools don’t always have the resources or staff to support kids like Aydan the way he needs. Online, he gets the attention and tools that help him succeed.”

With the support of caring teachers, access to essential technology and the flexibility to learn at his own pace, Aydan is now on a path toward greater independence and continued growth.

Reflecting on Aydan’s growth, his mother said, “If we had to do it all over again, we would choose HVAM first, no question. It’s been the best decision for him. His doctors, therapists and teachers all see the progress, and so do we.”
