Scoop Into School Brings HVAM Families Together for a Meaningful Start
In-person moments matter, even in a virtual school.
That’s the idea behind Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan’s (HVAM) recent Scoop into School event, which welcomed more than 250 students, families, and staff at twelve locations across the state.
Held during the first month of school, the event is designed to bring people together face-to-face and offer a warm welcome for returning and new students alike.
While each site offered a slightly different experience, what they shared (aside from tons of delicious ice cream) was a sense of community and belonging that can only be experienced off-screen.
A Local Gathering with Statewide Reach
From Grand Rapids to Reed City, Scoop into School created opportunities for families to connect in their own regions. HVAM staff greeted students with a mix of colorful ice cream cones, Dippin’ Dots, popsicles, and bottled drinks.
In Waterford Township, students picked up HVAM swag while chatting with their teachers. In Detroit, many kids (and even some parents) experienced flying a kite for the first time. One family traveled three hours to the Reed City event so their third grader could meet her teacher in person.
Across all locations, students stayed engaged until the very end, taking part in group photos, sharing hugs, lingering by the activity tables and, of course, eating all the ice cream we brought.
Hands-On, Face-to-Face
The activities at Scoop into School were simple but meaningful. Students decorated bookmarks using markers, pencils, and stickers. A large HVAM sign invited group coloring, which later served as a photo backdrop. Some teachers hosted sack races and other relay-style games. One set up cornhole, which became popular among older students (and a few competitive parents).
Teachers spoke with parents about upcoming projects and answered questions about the school year. These casual, low-pressure conversations helped many families feel more connected to the school and supported their virtual learning experience.
Kimberly Kramer, HVAM’s Community Engagement Specialist, recalled watching a student she had met during state testing come out of her shell and actively participate during the event. Another student met her teacher during the event and sat for a pretend tea party they had discussed online earlier this year.
Connection Beyond the Classroom
Scoop into School is one of several in-person events HVAM families can attend throughout the year. Others include field trips to farms and museums—shared experiences that offer students a chance to be social and active in ways that complement their online lessons.
For many families, the event served as a reminder that virtual school is not an isolated experience. It’s also about relationships, and HVAM continues to invest in ways to make them stronger, both on and off the screen.
