Spooky Science Experiments for Kids

Stories & Spotlights

Fall is the perfect time for a little spooky fun—and what better way to celebrate the season than with some hands-on science? At Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan (HVAM), we love showing students that learning can happen anywhere, not just in a classroom. These easy, at-home science experiments are fun, safe, and great for kids of all ages (K Prep through high school). Plus, they’re a perfect way to sneak in some STEM learning while enjoying the Halloween spirit!

1. Bubbling Baking Soda Pumpkins

What you need:

  • Mini pumpkins (or carved jack-o’-lanterns)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional)

Scoop a little baking soda inside your pumpkin, then pour in some vinegar. Watch it bubble, fizz, and foam like a spooky potion!

This experiment is a great way to introduce chemical reactions. When vinegar (an acid) mixes with baking soda (a base), carbon dioxide gas forms—creating all those fun bubbles.

2. Glowing Slime

What you need:

  • Clear glue
  • Liquid starch (or contact lens solution with borax)
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint or highlighter ink

Mix the glue with the starch until it turns into slime, then stir in your glowing paint. Turn off the lights and watch it ooze!

Slime is all about polymers—long chains of molecules that give it that stretchy, gooey texture. Students can learn about how molecules bond while having some sensory fun.

3. Candy Corn Dissolving Race

What you need:

  • Candy corn (or another Halloween candy)
  • Clear cups of water, vinegar, and soda

Drop a piece of candy into each liquid and observe what happens. Which one dissolves the fastest? Which changes color the most?

This experiment explores solubility—the ability of a substance to dissolve in liquid. Kids get to compare variables while practicing observation and prediction.

4. Dancing Ghost Balloons

What you need:

  • White balloons
  • A marker (to draw ghost faces)
  • Wool cloth or hair

Blow up your balloon, rub it on wool or your hair to create static electricity, and watch it stick to walls, “float” near ceilings, or make your hair stand on end.

Static electricity shows how electrons move and create charges. It’s a fun intro to the basics of electricity and forces.

Learning Can Be Spooky (and Fun!)

These experiments aren’t just great Halloween activities—they’re also a way to connect science to everyday life. At HVAM, we believe that learning should be exciting, hands-on, and personal for every student. That’s why our tuition-free online school in Michigan blends interactive lessons with opportunities for families to bring learning to life at home.

Ready to Join the HVAM Community?

At Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan, we serve students in grades K Prep–12 with a personalized, supportive online learning experience. With Michigan-certified teachers, engaging curriculum, and fun opportunities like clubs and in-person events, HVAM is more than an online school—it’s a community.

Enroll today in HVAM and discover how learning can be both educational and a little spooky fun this October!
